JEROME RODGERS-BLAKE

Jerome is a Senior Animator who has worked in the Games industry for 7+ years. Having worked on a number of AAA titles such as Totalwar: Warhammer II and Totalwar: Warhammer III at Creative Assembly and The lords of the Fallen at Hexworks.

He has extensive knowledge and skill in character and creature animation and is the founder of the Advanced Animation Academy. He is a big contributor to the animation community speaking at GDC Microtalks 2022.

COURSE BREAKDOWN

WEEK 01 | ANATOMY AND ANIMATION: WALK CYCLES

This course will equip you with the knowledge to create a convincing and realistic walk cycle from scratch, utilizing the principles of animation. Furthermore, you will receive in-depth instruction on human anatomy and how it influences the movement of both male and female characters.

WEEK 02 | HOW TO ADD WEIGHT TO CHARACTERS

Weight plays a crucial role in animation as it impacts the movement and interaction of characters with their environment. Through this class, we will provide an in-depth analysis of how weight affects the human body, and provide practical demonstrations on how to effectively incorporate weight into 3D animation.

WEEK 03 | INTERACTING WITH HEAVY OBJECTS

This lesson will be centered around the application of timing, spacing, and exaggeration techniques to effectively convey the addition of weight to a 3D character in a convincing manner.

WEEK 04 | RUN AND SPRINT MECHANICS

This week's course content encompasses a wide range of topics such as timing, spacing, arcs, weight, and anticipation, and includes a discussion on how to generate a realistic sense of speed and momentum. By the conclusion of this week, you will possess the necessary skills to design a convincing run and sprint cycle.

WEEK 05 | PARKOUR & DYNAMIC MOTION

Our course curriculum will delve into a range of topics such as timing, spacing, arcs, anticipation, follow-through, and squash and stretch, while also exploring how to generate a sense of weight and gravity in your animation. By the end of this course, you will possess an enhanced comprehension of how to design dynamic motion in your animation.

WEEK 06 | MAKING A CONVINCING ATTACK

This week's lesson will focus on enhancing your attack animations by utilizing timing, spacing, and principles of animation such as anticipation, follow-through, and exaggeration. You will learn how to create a realistic sense of power and impact in your animations and make them more dynamic and exciting. Additionally, we will cover how to effectively use timing and spacing to create a convincing sense of realism

WEEK 07 | HOW TO SELL IMPACT

You will learn how to apply animation principles such as timing, spacing, follow through, and overlapping action to create impactful and believable animations. The class will cover techniques for creating realistic impacts, as well as how to use anticipation and exaggeration to make your animations more dynamic and exciting. By the end of the class, you will have acquired the skills to create powerful and dynamic impacts in your animation

WEEK 08 | ANIMATION PROJECT 01 - TAKEDOWNS PLANNING & REFERENCE

This week marks the beginning of your take down animation project. You will be guided on the process of preparing, researching, and planning your shots to ensure that you can create your most impressive shot to date.

WEEK 09 | ANIMATION PROJECT 02 - BLOCKING

This week, we will provide you with additional animation workflow tips and techniques to further enhance your shot creation process. These insights will assist you in optimizing your animation pipeline, allowing you to create high-quality shots efficiently and effectively

WEEK 10 | ANIMATION PROJECT 03 - SPLINING

This week, you will have the opportunity to further develop your animation workflow by applying advanced techniques to your shot. Through this process, you will gain valuable experience in streamlining your production pipeline and enhancing the quality of your final animation.

WEEK 11 | ANIMATION PROJECT 04 - FINAL POLISH & CAMERA ANIMATION

This week's lesson will focus on adding the final touches to your shot, elevating it from good to exceptional. You will learn how to polish your animation, including refining timing and spacing, adding weight and anticipation, and incorporating proper arcs and follow-through. By the end of the class, you will have the skills to make your animation stand out and leave a lasting impression on viewers.

WEEK 12 | ANIMATION PROJECT 05 - PROJECT FEEDBACK 

In the final week of the course, you will have the opportunity to receive personalized feedback from your mentor, which will assist you in taking your shot to the next level.
