COURSE BREAKDOWN

WEEK 01 | WHAT IS MOTION CAPTURE?

Throughout this course, students will gain comprehensive knowledge on the various types of motion capture systems, their strengths and limitations, and how to implement them in a production environment. Additionally, students will explore various software packages for motion capture, and discover how to leverage them to produce highly realistic and nuanced animations. This course will also delve into advanced techniques for creating dynamic and captivating motion capture performances, giving students the ability to produce truly immersive and impactful visuals.

WEEK 02 | HOW TO DIRECT A MOTION CAPTURE SHOOT

In the second week of this course, students will be taught the art of directing a successful and efficient motion capture shoot. We will delve into the crucial aspects of communication and collaboration amongst the director, actors, and crew, which are essential for the successful execution of a motion capture project. Additionally, we will explore post-production techniques and guide you on how to effectively utilize motion capture data to create a polished final product.

WEEK 03 | RETARGET MOCAP TO CUSTOM RIGS

This week, students will gain expertise in the critical process of retargeting motion capture data to custom rigs. They will learn to recognize and circumvent common errors made in this stage of production, enhancing their ability to deliver high-quality animations.

WEEK 04 | IMPROVING RAW MOCAP DATA

Students will be instructed in production-ready workflows that enhance the quality and effectiveness of their motion capture results. This includes techniques and best practices for refining motion capture data, optimizing post-processing workflows, and maximizing the overall impact of motion capture in a production setting.

WEEK 05 | LOOPING MOTION CAPTURE DATA

In this lesson, students will learn advanced techniques for refining their motion capture data and creating seamless looping animations. They will explore methods for smoothing out transitions and eliminating glitches, as well as best practices for creating looped animations that seamlessly repeat without any visible breaks or hiccups. By the end of the lesson, students will have a thorough understanding of how to take their motion capture animations to the next level and create polished, professional-looking content

WEEK 06 | MOTION CAPTURE PROJECT: PHONE-POWERED ANIMATION

In the final week project, students will utilize Rokoko and their smartphones to engage in hands-on motion capture, creating a custom animation project. Students will record motion capture data using Rokoko and their devices, emphasizing creativity and experimentation. They will then apply principles learned throughout the course, including retargeting, refinement, looping, and polishing, to enhance the quality of their animations. Upon submission, the instructor will provide personalized feedback, and students will receive a certificate of completion for successfully completing this practical and innovative motion capture project, showcasing their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.
